Garlic Toast

Bread is a common staple in my household (my grandpa is a baker so it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise) and I am always looking for ways to jazz it up. Meet my crunchy friend…garlic toast! It is super easy to make – you only need a couple of minutes. But, the end result is so flavorful. The extra virgin olive oil gives the bread a lovely aromatic taste and the garlic…well its delicious garlic flavor! Plus, the black pepper adds a little heat to the back of your tongue. It’s simply perfect-o.

Cooking Tips...

There are many ways to get that yummy garlic flavor onto your toast. In this recipe, I used the “cut garlic” method to rub the flavor of the garlic onto the bread. However, if you don’t have fresh garlic on hand, you can easily use garlic powder as well. Just remember to sprinkle a light layer if you plan on using the powder (it’s strong stuff!).

If you are a garlic fanatic like me and can’t get enough of it, I recommend mincing up the garlic clove and infusing it with the oil. To infuse, simply combine the minced garlic and oil in a small bowl and use a spoon to press the garlic to release its juices. Then, use a pastry brush to coat the slice of bread with the garlic oil. Hope you aren’t afraid of bad breath! =)

If you want to boost up the flavor, you can add a sprinkle of dried basil leaves at the end. However, eating it just as I describe below, is how I like it best.

Garlic Toast Recipe

garlic toast
A crunchy toast with lots of garlic flavor

Serves 1

Ingredients

1 slice whole wheat bread
1 ½ teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
salt and pepper to taste
1 garlic clove, peeled

Directions

Drizzle the extra virgin olive oil on one side of the bread. Sprinkle a little salt and pepper (about a pinch each) on top.

Place the slice of bread in a non-stick skillet on medium-low heat. Toast for about a minute each on both sides, or until golden brown. Turn off heat, and place the toast on a serving plate.

Cut the garlic clove in half and give it a light smash to get its juices flowing. Rub the garlic pieces onto both sides of the toast. Cut garlic toast diagonally, and serve!

Healthy Benefits
Whole wheat bread is an excellent source of fiber and magnesium. It has been shown to protect against breast cancer and heart disease. Extra virgin olive oil is the least processed out of all the olive oils. It contains powerful antioxidants that reduce your risk for heart disease. Garlic helps fight off various types of cancers and lower blood pressure.
