Dips and Spreads

Who doesn’t love a good dip or spread? They are perfect for just about every occasion – parties and picnics alike. Whether it’s spicy salsa for nachos or chunky hummus for pita chips, dips and spreads add a burst of flavor to any regular ingredient.

That’s why they are just so darn good for healthy snacking as well!

“But don’t dips and spreads contain a lot of fat?” you may ask. Yes, many store-bought ones do. That’s largely because they include mayonnaise and grated cheese. However, simply by substituting these ingredients with healthy options (like nuts or veggies), you can make a wholesome dip or spread equally as tasty!

Here is a collection of recipes for creamy, easy-to-make, healthy dips and spreads that do without the unhealthy ingredients, but not the big bold flavor!

munch on these

Guacamole
Avocado has been one of my favorite childhood snacks. Something about its richness, smooth texture, and natural fattiness has always made it a guilty pleasure for me. What better way to celebrate the avocado, than alongside fresh tomatoes, cilantro, garlic, onion and lime in guacamole. Indulge yourself (healthfully) and don’t forget to pass around the dip!

Garlicky Basil Mayonnaise Spread
Man oh man is this spread good! By using canola mayonnaise, you get all the body and flavor of real mayonnaise without the cholesterol. Lets say it gives mayonnaise fans like me, a reason not to feel so guilty after using up most of the jar. This spread gets freshness and zip from the lemon juice, basil, garlic. I could slather this on almost anything…really.

Peanut Butter Yogurt Dip
This dip is a tasty peanut butter flavored accompaniment to any fruit or vegetable platter. It really works well with sliced apples, baby carrots and celery sticks. All you need are four simple ingredients to whip this up. Yogurt gives the dip a light tangy background to the rich peanut butter that works perfectly with any fruit or vegetable. You can easily make this ahead of time and set in the fridge before company arrives.
